It all started with a conversation when Rian mentioned how bad it is to be single and how great it is to have someone who looks after you other than your mother. Jacaranda FM took it further by asking you why it was so difficult to date and the biggest problem that became apparent was that having kids made it even more troublesome when finding a partner. That was the trigger to bring back Date My Dad and help one lucky father to find love.

The radio station asked kids to nominate their dads for Date My Dad and after we found Meran, we asked all eligible girls to enter themselves of which Meran chose 5 ladies to go on a date with compliments of Emperors Palace. Not only did Emperors Palace host the couples but Stuttafords joined the party to kit out both Meran and his dates with great outfits to wear.

After Meran went on 5 dates with his top 5 ladies, we got them all together where we started the process of finding the one lady that Meran wanted to get to know most!

The final five were Nadine Badenhorst, Licia de Bod, Chantelle Engelbrecht, Tania Coetzee and Melanie Joubert.

18 days since being announced Jacaranda FM’s most dateable dad, 34-year old Meran Wilson from Centurion announced his dream date this morning during the riveting grand finale of Date My Dad 2012.

Rian van Heerden and the Jacaranda FM Complimentary Breakfast team broadcast live from Emperors Palace – the venue where Meran got to spend some quality, one-on-one time with each of our 5 finalists. “Tough” week for our man, having to woo 5 beautiful, finely selected ladies – Nadine Badenhorst, Licia de Bod, Chantelle Engelbrecht, Tania Coetzee and Melanie Joubert – between 12 and 16 August.

They were all in studio this morning – each sharing their impressions of Meran on their respective dates. It turns out that his daughter, 4-year old Isabel, and 6-year old son, Kieren, were spot-on in saying that their dad was an all-round nice, fix-it-all, FUN kind of guy that any girl out there would be fortunate to have.

All 5 ladies knew this and, though Rian gave them the option to “exit the show with your dignity intact before we start the elimination process”, they all chose to stay – not making Meran’s choice any easier.

He, too, said that the choice would be incredibly difficult, with each one of the ladies having something uniquely beautiful and exciting to offer. “The only thing I really base my final decision on is whether I can see this person walking my path with me, whether she is heading in the same direction.”

With friends, family and many public supporters outside the studio window – watching the drama unfold – one lady was eliminated each half an hour starting at 8am. Tania, Licia and Nadine were first to go The were clearly more than ‘fairly’ disappointed, but still in good spirits and more than open to the idea of a good friendship with Meran after the competition was over.

Nail-bitingly tense moments passed in the 15 minutes leading up to 10am, with Chantell, who works in Dentistry, and Melanie, who works in Finance, as the final two – each with an equal chance of becoming our dad’s favourite date and, perhaps, the future Mrs. Wilson.

A selection process, quite a few in-studio interviews, an on-air singing debut, a surprise psychic evaluation, a secret wardrobe inspection, a lady-selection process, a Stuttafords makeover, some dancing, cocktail mixing, cooking, casino games, a live show, 5 awesome Emperors Palace dates and a grand finale later… Meran chose Melanie to be the lady by his side – all to the soundtrack of champagne corks popping and a roaring round of applause from the crowd, including the other finalists.

The normally composed Melanie was absolutely elated and Meran, definitely relieved, was absolutely sure that he had made the right choice.

The two are in agreement about one thing: “This has been an interesting and immensely fun ride so far. We both know what we signed up for and we’re going to take it one step at a time – no expectations… just good fun, good friendship and whatever happens from there!”

It was a wild and exciting morning on Jacaranda FM’s Complimentary Breakfast. 2012’s most dateable dad found his leading lady… Is it LOVE? Will it last? Will it turn into something more? Stay tuned to Jacaranda FM, weekdays between 6 and 10am to find out!
